Where design is for me the skill, it is business that is my experience. In my work as a designer and entrepreneur I cross-pollinate these both to create not designs but stories that create value for business. I believe that business benefits largely by good design if design is human centered and therefore end-user centric.
Starting out in marketing & management in the first decade of my career made me understand the powerfield of design possibilities (feasibility), the business savviness (viability) and the end-user desire (desirability). The last five years I use (industrial) design more as the starting point for new ventures. This we do in our design firm innberg, which I co-founded and own with ilya Devèrs, one of the marvelous minds in coaching people and designing change.
My portfolio stretches of designing new brand concepts to interior design. I am consider myself a new breed designer that incorporates the knowledge of new technologies and cultural change, as it belongs to my heritage of consulting marketing and interaction design. The last three years the focus has been 'workplace innovation', which is the area of people, spaces and things in the workplace. I conceptualized a mobile co-creation suite in 2006, which we later designed into a product suite (2007) with both furniture products and knowledge tools. You can find it under "Furniture design'. We were awarded with a 'my innovative workplace' award from the Dutch Government, a cheque handed out to us by the prime-minister.
In 2008 we spotted a second gap in workplace design, being a prolongation on the modular and flexible thinking I used in designing the 'innvirement suite'. A modular seating system with seats, table and acoustic paneling was designed and introduced in March of 2009. It is called 'Basecamp'.
With our brands innberg and innvire we help international customers design better workplaces, changes and products. We are strong in bringing our own designs to the market but also design in commission for third parties.
Professional background
I have a bachelors degree in automative management and marketing (Northwood University '94), and a degree in automotive technology and management (IVA business school '93). I have lived in the US, Germany and Paris, France for study and work, which helped my understand cultural differences, but also saw what binds people globally.
I have worked for industrial companies and consulting companies in the years before owning our design agency. I worked for large customers in both our company as previous companies like Toshiba Europe, Heineken, Philips, Exact Software, Rabobank Corporate, Bijenkorf Dept. Stores and Delft Instruments. This knowledge and experience helps me as a designer to understand how design fits in business and the hurdles that ideas/concepts have to take before becoming successful products and services.
